Gemma's designing inspiration

What started your design journey?

The design gene definitely runs in my family, and I was always encouraged to express my creativity through drawing, painting, and using my hands. Design is a passion, and that passion has never left me. I couldn’t imagine doing anything other than being a designer, and working with jewellery allows me to expand that creativity beyond something that just ‘looks pretty’. Jewellery design involves practical elements as well such as how to show a gem off to its best, and how to connect with the wearer and capture their spirit within a piece of bespoke, handmade jewellery. That’s what makes each piece such an exciting challenge.

What inspires you?

The story behind a piece is the biggest inspiration of all, because it’s so personal and unique. My job is to capture that and work it into the finished piece. Just going for a walk on the beach or in the woods can trigger so many ideas, even from the simplest shapes. I’m overwhelmed every day with ideas taken from the natural world. Nature in all its forms is the second-biggest inspiration after the story. My job is to bring the two together.

What do you love about designing?

The sense of freedom. The only limit is my imagination, and no two designs are ever the same. Every day is a fresh challenge, so it keeps me constantly striving for new and exciting ideas, and of course, the most beautiful way to interpret those ideas in precious metal and gems. You’re a part of a bespoke piece of jewellery for its whole journey – you’re there at the start and you get to see the result once a goldsmith has worked their magic on your design. And naturally, you get to see the client’s reaction too, which makes it all worthwhile.
